Acute Exposure Effect of Sulfur Dioxide on the Respiratory Tract in Rats

Abstract

|
In order to study the acute effect of sulfur dioxide exposure, 7 weeks old SD rats were subjected to the gas for 4 hours a day, 2 days at a concentration of 1000ppm in 0.5m?whole body inhalation chamber and were examined to monitor the changes of
respiratory tract and hematological parameters. Animals exposed to sulfur dioxide began to demonstrate severe dyspnea and some of animals were dead. Rats treated with sulfur dioxide showed severe weight loss at 2 or 3 days. Hematocritical values
were
found to be a higher(p<0.01) in the sulfur dioxide-treated group (53±3.02), when compared to the control group value (46.59±2.13) as a result of hematological findings. Loss of cilia and goblet cells, desquamation of tracheal and bronchial
epithelium,
emphysema, hemorrhage and increase of alveolar macrophage were found in rats treated with sulfur dioxide.
